Art therapy encourages creativity and self-expression; sensations that are generally suppressed and not experiences in the conventional workplace. It can, however, be used to counter those negative emotions that are experienced within the workplace: Art therapy is a portable form of therapy, and one that can be practiced alone or collectively.

The usefulness of the art therapy modality in making visible the covert messages and hidden edicts from the family of origin will be illustrated. Through use of art materials couples are given an opportunity to solve problems in a manner which is unique and unfamiliar. The challenge of art tasks leads the couple to problem-solving and a creative approach in mastering a change in their relationship.

Using art to express emotion accesses both visually stored memory and body memory, as not only does it enable people to create images, but the use of art materials such as clay and paint can reconnect them to physical sensation. They may be cut off from their bodily senses, particularly in cases of physical and sexual abuse. Some researchers have suggested that the senses of touch and sight connect directly to our brain’s fear centre which is why art therapy is ideally placed to work with traumatic memory.
